Boykin
Puppies

Previous Litters:

Background

In the early 1900's, the Boykin Spaniel was bred by South Carolina hunters
to provide the ideal dog for hunting ducks and wild turkeys in local swamps and waterways.

They needed a small, rugged, compact dog that could retrieve on land and water,
and easily share the small boats that were used for hunting.

The Boykin Spaniel filled this need perfectly.

See www.boykinspaniel.org/boykin.html for more information.

Our Boykins

We breed Boykins on the smaller size range of the breed.
Most of our puppies grow to an adult size of about 25-30 pounds.

This size is especially well suited as an Upland Retriever -
small enough to maneuver through thick brush, yet large enough to easily retrieve birds.
We also believe this smaller size is especially well suited in rough terrain -
larger dogs experience much more "wear and tear" on their pads in these conditions.

Boykins are natural waterfowl retrievers, and natural upland game flushers.
They are a very trainable dog, and can be trained to point.

We breed for natural hunting instincts - our Boykins can easily retrieve birds such as Quail, Chukar, Pheasant, Ducks, and even Geese.

We also breed for a gentle disposition - our Boykins are very loving, and especially suited as family pets.

Hip Certification
We are frequently asked about Boykins and hip displacia.

The Boykin Spaniel Society has recently started suggesting that all breeding Boykins be tested for hip displacia.
We whole heartedly agree with this suggestion.

As of November, 2005 - all of our Boykin puppies have been bred from females and males
that have successfully passed testing for hip displacia.

We will continue breeding our Boykins in the smaller range of the breed.
We believe this size is perfect for bird hunting, but also significantly reduces the exposure to conditions such as hip displacia.

If Momma wants a lap dog, and and Daddy wants a hunting dog -
Then everybody's happy with a Boykin!

How do we prepare each puppy?
We carefully prepare every puppy for you, including:

  • Your puppy is successfully feeding on solid food.
  • Your puppy has received it's first round of shots.
  • Per the breed specifications, the tail is "bobbed".

What is NOT included?
At 6 weeks of age, the puppies are not yet trained.
They are puppies - cute, loveable, active, puppies.
You can look forward to all the joys of "puppyhood" - housebreaking, etc.

How long will I have to wait for my puppy?
There are currently about 10 names on our Boykin waiting list, and we have two females that we will be breeding.  If you reserve a puppy now, our best guess is that you should see your puppy in about six months, perhaps a bit longer.  If you prefer a male puppy, or have no preference; then you are likely to see your puppy sooner.
Of course, we cannot predict the size of litters, or the mix of male and female puppies.
It may sound like a long time to wait, but it will get here sooner than you think!

Melanie - The Grand Old Dame

We are frequently asked what Boykins look like as they age.

Here are some pictures of Melanie - who lived to the age of 15.
She was the Aunt of Maggie Jo, and the Great Aunt of Roxy Blue and Ali May.

Melanie shared her home with Roxy Blue and two very special young ladies.

Aren't we

distinguished

as we gray!

Sadly, Melanie went to Doggie Heaven in November, 2005.

She was a wonderful, gentle companion for many, many years.
We miss her dearly, and will cherish every memory forever.
